Are you paying your staff the correct amount for the hours they have worked?

are you paying

I came across the article: “Sports Direct warehouse workers to receive back pay,” (Simon Goodley, The Gaurdian, 2016) which highlights how the major Sport Retailer was ensuring its bottom line was protected by unfairly penalising members in an unethical manner and making staff members complete tasks beyond their working hours unpaid

The articles states that: “Warehouse staff were required to go through searches at the end of each shift, during which their time was unpaid. They also suffered deductions from their wage packets for clocking in for a shift a minute late.”

In business, you are always going to be striving to achieve maximum possible productivity whilst reducing unnecessary spend. However the practice adopted by Sports Direct seems very short sighted. Their reputation has taken a damaging blow as result and this approach will never attract talented individuals to come and remain valuable assets within your workforce.

“HMRC said: “This isn’t about doing deals. While we don’t discuss individual cases we won’t accept anything less than what’s owed. Our role is to investigate all cases where we believe an employer is not paying its workers the national minimum wage to ensure those workers receive what they are owed under the law.”

So how does this apply to us here at Thinking Software?

For those of you not familiar with us here at Thinking Software, we have developed and support our Enterprise Time & Attendance solution, Rota Horizon.

It provides you with the perfect Workforce Management tool to accurately record and monitor employee attendance. Our solution also seamlessly integrates with the majority of Access Control Manufacturers hardware, more information on those we currently integrate with can be found here.

The solution allows you to: Electronically plan your staff rotas more efficiently, produce over 150 Time & Attendance reports, Monitor lateness, absence & break times, Calculate employee work and overtime hours as well as exporting accumulated hours to any payroll system or excel spreadsheet to match these up against the relevant pay rates.

With reference to the article discussed, Rota Horizon can be used at a tool to ensure that Employees are working the hours that they have been allocated. As an employee in a role you are passionate about, you will take pride in ensuring that you deliver what is expected of you. On that basis ensuring you complete your working hours is imperative, but having this information to populate Payroll acts as a greater incentive for the use of a Time & Attendance solution.

Within the system you also have the platform to plan staff effectively within a Rota. By Rota Horizon understanding exactly what hours employees are working, at the pay rates they are being paid, Rota Horizon’s Department Summary will provide you with an accurate forecast of spend in each department. This can be put against a budget, ensuring you remain within this and giving you the chance to amend the rota where necessary to ensure you do so.
