“The vast majority of UK employers (81%) are working beyond their contracted hours. However, businesses are not rewarding these staff for their efforts with only 13% stating that they are compensated for working extra hours.” (Letitia Booty, 2016)
I came across this in the article: “UK employees go unrewarded for working beyond contracted hours” which reinforces my thought process that this is more common in British working culture than perhaps many are aware.
The article goes on to state: “Only 32% of professionals believe that they are productive during the extra hours that they work. A third (34%) don’t take their lunch break at all, with millennials (21%) being the largest group to have a working day without their lunch break.”
In an unpredictable economic climate and with legislation always being scrutinised with the great potential to change by things like the EU referendum result, operationally businesses will strive to be at their optimum productivity. However is this coming at a cost?
The common theme in previous articles where this particular subject has been assessed have all reached the same conclusion. More hours on the job does not have a direct correlation with increased productivity. While there is situations where the ‘needs must’ approach needs to be applied, many forward thinking businesses are doing all they can to ensure that employees don’t suffer from any work induced stress or fatigue.
So how does this apply to us here at Thinking Software?
For those of you not familiar with us here at Thinking Software, we have developed and support our Enterprise Time & Attendance solution, Rota Horizon.
It provides you with the perfect Workforce Management tool to accurately record and monitor employee attendance. Our solution also seamlessly integrates with the majority of Access Control Manufacturers hardware, more information on those we currently integrate with can be found here.
The solution allows you to: Electronically plan your staff rotas more efficiently, produce over 150 Time & Attendance reports, Monitor lateness, absence & break times, Calculate employee work and overtime hours as well as exporting accumulated hours to any payroll system or excel spreadsheet to match these up against the relevant pay rates.
With reference to the article discussed specifically, Rota Horizon provides the ideal tool to understand exactly what additional hours employees have completed. So this can be through the contracted hours report, that looks at an employees contractual obligation vs the hours they actually completed. This could also be done through the Working Time Directive report that looks at those who have exceeded an average of 48 hours.
Rota Horizon also allows you to effectively manage all forms of absence as well. So while you can understand when people have had unauthorised absence and even produce a report of worst offenders with the Bradford Factor Report, you can also plan for people’s Annual Leave and the system will record the remaining balance.
More relevant to the article you can also allow employees to accrue Lieu, an effective way of ensuring employees can devote additional time where it is required and take additional time off at a later date as a result. This has the great potential to reduce ‘Workplace Fatigue’ ensuring staff are at their most productive when they do work.
