I came across the article: “Jeremy Corbyn vows to ban zero hours contracts and pledges to protect workers’ rights.” We have addressed ‘Zero Hours’ contracts in previous articles and it is clear that they are a particularly controversial subject.
There are some in favour who like the flexibility that they offer, ensuring you are not to committed to specific hours every week. This can be advantageous parents with young children who may struggle to find care consistently during their working hours.
However the strong argument from the other side is that these jobs offer very little security and the employee is never certain exactly how much they are going to earn on a weekly/monthly basis. Understandably many feel that employers should be responsible for making sure that the most vulnerable are protected and their quality of life is improved.
This is the issue that Corbyn understandably wishes to address with the article stating:
“The Labour leader said there would be a ban on zero-hour contracts and promised to bring back collective bargaining for firms of more than 250 staff. “The Labour leader will go further by announcing plans for New Zealand-style laws that force bosses to give workers guaranteed hours in a written contract.”
So how does this apply to us here at Thinking Software?
For those of you not familiar with us here at Thinking Software, we have developed and support our Enterprise Time & Attendance solution, Rota Horizon.
It provides you with the perfect Workforce Management tool to accurately record and monitor employee attendance. Our solution also seamlessly integrates with the majority of Access Control Manufacturers hardware, more information on those we currently integrate with can be found here.
The solution allows you to: Electronically plan your staff rotas more efficiently, produce over 150 Time & Attendance reports, Monitor lateness, absence & break times, Calculate employee work and overtime hours as well as exporting accumulated hours to any payroll system or excel spreadsheet to match these up against the relevant pay rates.
We have organisations from all sectors come to us for assistance managing their staff, ensuring they are prompted when they are not meeting contract rules. This could be Government legislation or rules imposed by the company, Rota Horizon will store the rules you require and highlight if the staff rostered aren’t eligible based on the rules set.
With particular relevance to the article, this includes managing ‘Zero Hours’ contract employees. So as it stands you can understand exactly what hours they have worked with a number of different reports to produce this information. Their holiday entitlement can also be automatically accumulated by the number of shifts they have completed.
However, if Mr Corbyn is successful in his push to see ‘Zero Hours’ contracts abolished, Rota Horizon is the perfect tool to assist you in ensuring that employees are rostered to work the minimum number of hours they are entitled to. The contracted Hours Report is particularly useful to see what staff have completed against their contractual obligation. Also by running the Rota Rules in the Department Rota, it will highlight where an employee has fallen short.
