We have discussed and explored the way that Employers are are looking to adapt with reference to employee hours in previous articles, in order to achieve a positive response. The demand from Employees based on recent research that has been conducted is that they want shorter working days.
“The research which was commissioned by TeamViewer found that no less than 11 million workers in the UK would like to switch to a six-hour working day.
“72% of those surveyed said that the standard 9-to-5 office hours were now irrelevant to the 21st century, and many want more flexibility in the way they work.
“82% of respondents felt that they should be offered more flexibility, and 72% said that working flexibly makes them more effective. Those who achieve a better work-life balance are generally more productive and less stressed – 68% said that working 9-to-5 made them stressed.” (Darren Allan, World of Tech, 2016)
The debate that Employers will face is that firstly, will the reduction in hours allow enough time for Employees to complete their expectations in terms of things like KPI’s. Trialing these hours would be enough to provide the answer either way. However the ambitious business owner may then question whether they could have been achieving more if they were more productive in their existing approach.
That said, if the approach was to result in greater productivity and employee morale improved as a result of its introduction as well, then personally I would see the approach as a success. Productivity is likely to increase when staff are happy as this reflects in their work. As long as staff have the time to complete their tasks in that time, as long as they measured to ensure they are making progress, this seems like a positive move.
So how does this apply to us here at Thinking Software?
For those of you not familiar with us here at Thinking Software, we have developed and support our Enterprise Time & Attendance solution, Rota Horizon.
It provides you with the perfect Workforce Management tool to accurately record and monitor employee attendance. Our solution also seamlessly integrates with the majority of Access Control Manufacturers hardware, more information on those we currently integrate with can be found here.
The solution allows you to: Electronically plan your staff rotas more efficiently, produce over 150 Time & Attendance reports, Monitor lateness, absence & break times, Calculate employee work and overtime hours as well as exporting accumulated hours to any payroll system or excel spreadsheet to match these up against the relevant pay rates.
With reference to the article discussed, when introducing an innovative approach to employees working hours, in terms of measurement there would never be a more relevant time to ensure staff our completing their contractual obligation, as those hours have now become more expensive.
By simply understanding when employees are expected to be working, information that will be stored by all organisations, Rota Horizon provides the opportunity to use that and understand all forms of absence including Annual Leave and Sickness.
However the articles also discussed offering a more flexible way of working, something Rota Horizon also assists with. Utilising the Flex-Time Module enables staff to dictate when they complete their contracted hours. Companies can enforce core hours that the employee must be present, but outside those it provides the management tool required to enable the greater level of freedom the article highlights employees are craving.
