Parents offered term-time only contracts to bring them back into the workforce

When it comes to Employee Working hours in the UK, like with the majority of things these are constantly having to evolve as society changes. There’s a reason why we refer to traditional working hours as 9-5, historically these have been the more commonly worked hours by staff, but now there really is a demand for change.

This is demonstrated in the article I came across: “Parents offered term-time only contracts to bring them back into the workforce.”(KRISTY DORSEY, 2 OCT 2017, http://www.insider.co.uk)

Obviously these are quite common across the public sector and particularly working in education. However as the article highlights, surprisingly term time contracts are not commonly offered in the private sector.

“The company – a finalist again in this year’s insider employer awards – is now creating 10 term-time only jobs for staff who will automatically get all school holidays off. During term time, their hours will run from 9.30 to 2.30 to accommodate parents who need to collect their children from school.”

Perhaps in a more traditional sense this would have been unnecessary as one parent would always be on hand when the children required them. However again in modern day society like how businesses develop from demand in the market, that same demand has been applied for yet another flexible way of working that employees are craving.

So how does this apply to us here at Thinking Software?

For those of you not familiar with us here at Thinking Software, we have developed and support our Enterprise Time & Attendance solution, Rota Horizon.

It provides you with the perfect Workforce Management tool to accurately record and monitor employee attendance. Our solution also seamlessly integrates with the majority of Access Control Manufacturers hardware, more information on those we currently integrate with can be found Here.

The solution allows you to: Electronically plan your staff rotas more efficiently, produce over 150 Time & Attendance reports, Monitor lateness, absence & break times, Calculate employee work and overtime hours as well as exporting accumulated hours to any payroll system or excel spreadsheet to match these up against the relevant pay rates.

With reference to the article being discussed specifically Rota Horizon is designed to make all aspects of your staff planning far easier. So whatever contract staff members have, you will be able to specify these and the system will ensure they are rostered to work when expected and you remain compliant to rule stipulated in their contract.

Within the Department Rota is where the planned shifts are stored in a conventional working week format (Highlighted Below). It’s in here that you would easily be able to plan the described 9;30-2:30 shift with any breaks. Against the employees profile you will also be able to specify that the staff member is off during the school holiday period when they wont expected to be on site.
