When it comes to Employee Working hours in the UK, like with the majority of things these are constantly having to evolve as society changes. There’s a reason why we refer to traditional working hours as 9-5, historically these have been the more commonly worked hours by staff, but now there really is a demand for change.
This is demonstrated in the article I came across: “Parents offered term-time only contracts to bring them back into the workforce.”(KRISTY DORSEY, 2 OCT 2017, http://www.insider.co.uk)
Obviously these are quite common across the public sector and particularly working in education. However as the article highlights, surprisingly term time contracts are not commonly offered in the private sector.
“The company – a finalist again in this year’s insider employer awards – is now creating 10 term-time only jobs for staff who will automatically get all school holidays off. During term time, their hours will run from 9.30 to 2.30 to accommodate parents who need to collect their children from school.”
Perhaps in a more traditional sense this would have been unnecessary as one parent would always be on hand when the children required them.
