The Brexit debate has been a long drawn out one and is arguably the most prominent topic in current affairs. It is likely to remain that way as the outcome will dramatically effect things politically and economically in the UK as new trade agreements need to be formed and enforced legislation on the country will be reduced.
We have addressed most aspects of Employee working hours and the most recent article that I have come across: “EU seeks to add more protection for casual workers,” (Francesco Guarascio, 2017, http://www.independent.co.uk) simply highlights the effects that Zero and Limited Hours Contracts have on employees. The question over whether they are ethical or not will continue to rage on. While an employee is guaranteed no hours they are provided with no security and left vulnerable.
The article states: “The Commission is proposing that workers should be properly informed about the conditions of their employment and should be given explanations by their employers for not having a permanent contract after a few years in the same job.” This would imply that perhaps those taking these kind of contracts are misled into doing so and would be far less likely to do so if the employers desires for the role are properly explained.
None the less with financial insecurity on the rise for many, the ethical argument would put forward that by providing employees with a fair number of guaranteed hours each week would also provide a far greater quality of life. Stress and mental illness are also on the rise with these types of working contracts being linked to the cause, leaving employees uncertain whether they can afford their outgoings.
