The Grenfell Tower disaster really was eye opener to everyone in understanding just how vulnerable buildings are to fire. Historically we all have had some form of fire safety education, but like many I’m sure we assume that these horrific events only happen to other people. We just remain very hopeful that we never have to endure an incident of that nature.
I came across the article: “Grenfell Tower insulation ‘never passed fire safety test.” (21 May 2018, https://www-bbc-com.cdn.ampproject.org) The disaster happened a year ago next month yet the investigation into that day continues and it appears we are still learning more to this day. The article goes on to state:
“The insulation that burned out of control on Grenfell Tower had never passed the required safety test and should never have been on the building, a BBC investigation has discovered. Panorama understands the manufacturer used extra fire retardant in the product that qualified for the safety certificate.”
It really is quite a frightening development in the story, as the article goes on to advise that there will be plenty more buildings in the same vulnerable state Grenfell was. As this has come to light there has never been a more important time to conduct fire safety testing to ensure any building your responsible for is as safe as it can possibly can be.
So how does this apply to us here at Thinking Software?
For those of you unfamiliar with us, here at Thinking Software we develop and support Workforce Management, Time & Attendance Software. MUSTERD is a product that has stemmed from dated ways that this can be addressed in Time & Attendance and Access Control by producing unreliable roll call reports.
Whatever your situation there is a MUSTERD solution for you. Sweep & Clear enables you to ensure the safety of areas within the organisation. Signs are located around the premesis and in the event of an Evacuation Safety Marshall’s will scan the signs to communicate what is happening in a particular location, which is perfect for organisations with lots of visitors like Hospitals, Sports Arenas or Music Venues.
MUSTERD can link to Access Control Security Systems constantly working in the background highlighting the movements of all employees. It reads directly from the Access Control SQL database meaning you get to utlise the existing product you have, which then becomes imperative in the event that the alarm is raised.
With reference to the article specifically, MUSTERD in the event of the disaster would act as the perfect ally to ensure everyone individual was either made safe, or all zones are cleared and this is communicated via the devices among the management team and emergency services.
However before and after an evacuation MUSTERD is used to carry out any evacuation drills and stores all necessary compliance information to highlight to all that the necessary tests have been completed at the appropriate times. So with reference to the recent development with Grenfell, MUSTERD would have acted as a tool to help ensure that fire safety tests were completed.
Like with most pieces of software, when an organisation adopts something new it can changes organisation or company culture. When we developed MUSTERD this was our intentions to make people’s safety easier to manage ensuring it’s given the attention that is certainly requires.
MUSTERD not only highlights when testing last took place in the areas required but it also records time taking to complete tasks, like making everyone safe in a test and who the fire marshals were, to highlight if staff are getting quicker in achieving this in tests moving forward and for feedback from the real thing.
